Module 11: Quality Assurance within School and Developing Comprehensive Standards beyond the School Level

Though I do not know if it would be better if things were done differently, but I know that they must be done differently if they have to get better.
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Developing quality within the school

Professional conduct includes critically examining the work done. Developing quality within the school focuses on the school as a whole. At the same time, it requires professional groups or teaching teams to systematically review the current status in different subjects. Discussing the results can reveal the strengths and weaknesses within the school and lead to a common concept of quality development. In the meantime, various national and international initiatives have been taken to support the evaluation and development of quality.

National Educational Standards

In February 2003, the German Federal Government presented the "Zur Entwicklung nationaler Bildungsstandards (The Development of National Educational Standards)" survey. In December 2003, the Conference of Ministers of Cultural Affairs and Education passed mandatory educational standards for school-leaving certificate (10th academic year) for the subjects German, mathematics and the first foreign language (English/French) throughout Germany.
In October 2004, standards for education for the above-mentioned subjects were introduced for the secondary school certificate (9th academic year) as well as for the primary education (4th academic year) for the subjects German and mathematics. Then, in December 2004, the Conference of Ministers of Cultural Affairs and Education passed educational standards for the school-leaving certificate (10th academic year) for the subjects biology, chemistry and physics.
